Cairo, Feb 23 (DPA) At least one person was killed and 12 others were injured in a bomb attack in a popular tourist destination in the Egyptian capital Cairo Sunday evening, according to witnesses.
The bomb exploded at the Khan el-Khalili bazaar in Cairo’s Medieval quarter, injuring at least 12 people, witnesses said. The blast was followed by another smaller blast shortly afterwards.
Witness Sharif Ma’amoul told DPA he was in a shop at the market just 20 metres from the blast. “At around 6:20 p.m. there was a very powerful explosion. There was smoke and fire.”
“I saw was people running and people carrying the wounded off,” Ma’amoul said.
Mohammed Gamal, another witness who was in a nearby restaurant, said the building buckled when the blast went off.
Witnesses also said police discovered another bomb and a bomb squad was at work defusing that.
The injured were reportedly taken to Ahmed Maher hospital and Hussein hospital close by.
