Washington, Apr.8 (ANI): Nearly one in four Americans believe that President Barack Obama was not born in the US.

Only “natural born citizens” are eligible to be president under the US Constitution.

A Fox News Poll has revealed that 24 percent of the voters believe Obama was not born in the US and Four in 10 Americans think there is “cause to wonder” he was born in the US.

According to the poll, 12 percent Democrats and 21 percent independents think Obama was born elsewhere. Among Republicans, 37 percent feel that the president is not US born, as do 41 percent of the Tea Party supporters.

However, 67 percent voters believe Obama was born in the United States, including 84 percent Democrats, 69 percent independents, 47 percent Republicans and 44 percent Tea Party supporters.

Questions about Barack Obama’s birthplace began during the 2008 presidential campaign, despite birth announcements from newspaper archives and the state of Hawaii releasing birth records.

The issue was recently re-ignited by possible Republican presidential candidate and real estate giant Donald Trump, who said the president should produce an original “long-form” birth certificate on several television talk shows.

So far the debate over Obama’s birthplace has not helped Trump gain an advantage over Obama. In a hypothetical 2012 election match-up, 34 percent say they would vote for Trump if he were the Republican candidate and 52 percent say they would back President Obama, Fox News reports.

The Fox News poll is based on landline and cell phone interviews with 914 randomly chosen registered voters nationwide and was conducted under the joint direction of Anderson Robbins Research (D) and Shaw & Company Research (R) from April 3 to April 5. It has a sampling error margin of plus or minus three percentage points. (ANI)
