Chandigarh, Sep 29(IANS) A youth suspected to be involved in the alleged molestation and abduction of a German tourist here was arrested in Ambala Monday evening, even as the police here continued their hunt for the five other men involved in the crime. The German woman was kidnapped from the upscale Taj Hotel and held captive for 12 hours and molested.
The youth arrested from Ambala town in Haryana, around 45 km from here, has been booked for attempted rape, illegal confinement and intimidation, the police said.
“We do not want to waste any time. So we did not bring the arrested youth, who is around 20 years old, back to Chandigarh. The police officials are interrogating him in Ambala and he has also disclosed the addresses of his other accomplices,” Assistant Superintendent of Police Madhur Verma told media persons here.
“The German woman is to visit Ambala to identify the suspect. The police will also take her to identify the farmhouse near Ambala where she was allegedly kept by the abductors,” Verma added.
The incident took place Sunday when six men in a black Scorpio SUV allegedly kidnapped the 20-year-old tourist from the parking lot of the Taj in Chandigarh’s Sector 17 commercial hub.
The woman, who was in the city to attend the wedding of a Germany-based NRI, has complained that she was taken to a room where she was raped, beaten and threatened. About 12 hours later, around 3 p.m. Sunday, a white Maruti car dropped her in Sector 20, close to the hotel.
“We have identified all the other five youths involved in the case who are still absconding. The arrested youth has disclosed that they had come to Chandigarh for an outing and abducted the German tourist at 2.10 a.m. Sunday,” Verma said.
However, Verma maintained that according to the medical report available, no rape had taken place. “We have sent some samples to the forensic laboratory and are waiting for its final report.”
Police found the Maruti car in Ambala that was used to drop the victim back to Chandigarh.
“We conducted raids in the surrounding areas and arrested the accused. All the accused belong to Ambala and surrounding areas. We have intensified our search operations in and around Ambala and hope to nab the remaining five very soon,” Verma said.
