One dead in UN agency blast in Somalia

Mogadishu, Sep 24 (IANS) One person was killed Saturday when a bomb accidentally went off in a vehicle at the office of a UN agency involved in land mine removal in Somalia, Xinhua reported.

The accident occurred at the UN Mine Action agency office in Somali capital Mogadishu, an official said.

The bomb was removed from a street in Mogadishu but was not properly defused.

The driver died and the vehicle and part of the compound wall were damaged by the bomb which went off as a result of improper handling. “It was purely accidental,” the official said.

The UN agency has been helping Somali government forces in removing land mines in the conflict-torn nation.
