One dead, 200 drivers trapped in Greece car crash
December 24th, 2011 - 7:49 am ICT by IANSAthens, Dec 24 (IANS) One motorist was killed while around 200 other drivers were trapped for hours in a multiple car crash during a heavy snowstorm in Greece, officials said.
Due to the icy roads, a truck tipped over on a national road near Kozani city in northern Greece Friday, causing a multiple car crash and blocking the highway for hours, Xinhua reported.
The trapped motorists were later evacuated by rescue teams.
Greece has been gripped by a cold front with heavy snowfall and rain. Strong winds and low temperatures have affected air and maritime transport.
Long queues in motorways awaited commuters, as thousands of Greeks got ready to leave major cities for the countryside to spend Christmas.
Dozens of villages near the borders with Bulgaria and Turkey have been left with no electricity since Friday, as snow and winds have knocked out power lines.
