November 12th, 2010 - 10:03 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattBeirut, Nov 12 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Omar Bakri Mohammad - the radical Muslim with a Lebanese and Syrian descent has been sentenced to life in prison in absentia by military court in Lebanon. Omar Bakri was sentenced on terrorism charges.
The renowned Muslim cleric lived in the United Kingdom for 20 years but was eventually bared from entering the country in 2005. When he was in Britain, Omar Bakri was the head of the radical group, al-Muhajiroun which has now been disbanded. Bakri is currently living in the Lebanese town of Tripoli.
Officials announced that Omar Bakri was sentenced to life in prison because of his failure to appear before the court during the trial. However Omar Bakri has spoken to the Associated Press from his residence in Tripoli. He claimed that all the allegations that were leveled against him were false and he accused the Lebanese authorities of “fabricating” the charges. He swore however that he will never turn himself in to authorities.
The Lebanese authorities are at liberty to arrest the cleric if they wish to because Omar Bakri is not hiding in the country. He constantly appears on television and he gives a lot of speeches throughout the country. Why the authorities in the country have failed to arrest him remains a mystery.
