Oldest Briton passes away at 111
October 21st, 2010 - 5:25 pm ICT by ANILondon, Oct 21 (ANI): Elsie Steele, who just last month became Britain’s oldest person, has died at the age of 111.
Born in 1899 during the reign of Queen Victoria, Steele passed away in her sleep on Monday at a care home in Repton, Derbyshire.
“It was an absolute privilege to know and care for Elsie. She was such a spirited person. Our residents will miss her,” The Daily Express quoted Care home manager Yvonne McComish as saying.
The great-grandmother witnessed two World Wars, the coronation of six monarchs, 22 prime ministers and the loss of the Titanic.
Steele, who had attributed the secret of her long life to ‘hard work and a glass of sherry’, became Britain’s oldest person after Annie Turnbull died last month, also at the age of 111.
Her death means Margaret Fish, 61 years younger, is now Britain’s oldest person. (ANI)
