New York, October 6 (ANI): The judges presiding over the hearing on former American football player O.J. Simpsons trial regarding the botched gunpoint memorabilia heist in a Sin City hotel room said Sunday night that the Juice convicted himself with his own words.
The panel said that the secretly recorded tapes had sealed Simpsons fate.
“The laws that were laid out were the laws. And they were clearly broken,” the New York Daily News quoted juror Dora Pettit as saying.
Simpsons lawyers complaints that the panel was biased against the former sports star, because there were no blacks among them, were also rejected.
The newspaper says that one juror identified herself in a court questionnaire as Hispanic.
“We”ve been painted as an all-white jury who hates O.J., and that’’s just not true,” said Pettit, adding that she prayed for Simpson and doesn”t care if he does a day in prison.
The jury of nine women and three men found Simpson and his accomplice Clarence (C.J.) Stewart guilty of all 12 criminal charges stemming from the September 13, 2007 hold-up.
“We heard it (a post-robbery recording) quite clearly. And we heard it more times than anyone else heard it,” Juror Michelle Lyons said.
The judges were of the view that they would have certainly acquitted Simpson in the absence of the tapes.
“It would have been a very weak case,” Pettit said.
As regards why they convicted Stewart, whom some observers pegged as a bit player, juror Teresa Owens said: “The thing that clinched it for me is he drove the car. …He came out of that room with items that didn”t belong to him.”
Simpson lawyer Yale Galanter vowed to appeal the verdict.
“We are going to fast-track it. Our notice will be filed 30 seconds after he’’s sentenced,” Galanter said.
Simpson’’s kidnapping charge carries a potential life sentence. (ANI)
