Occupy Wall Street protestors plan march from NYC to DC
November 9th, 2011 - 7:56 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, Nov 9 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Some Occupy Wall Street protesters have announced that they will walk from their base in New York City to Washington D.C. The protesters say they expect to reach their destination in two weeks.
The activists have dubbed the walk “Occupy the Highway” and they plan to start their walk on Wednesday afternoon. They estimate that they will reach the capital before the 23rd of November. The date is important because it is the deadline for the US Congressional Committee to decide whether the Bush-era tax cuts which were extended by the Obama administration should be kept or not.
About a dozen activists will take part in the 240-mile walk which will take them through New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. Others are expected to join them as they go through the route.
The march is organized by Kelley Brannon. He said that, “I mean, I’m not comparing us to Martin Luther King (referring to three marches King led in 1965 from Selma, Ala., to the state Capitol in Montgomery). Those marches ranged in size from 600 to 8,000 people. That’s the premise Occupy is taking to the road: the historic relevance of such long-distance marches for social causes.”
The protesters have been camping at the site since the 17th of September 2011 and they plan to stay as long as economic reforms are not made.
