Obama’s UK step-mom proud her son is meeting the QueenMarch 31st, 2009 - 5:16 pm ICT by ANI
London, Mar.31 (ANI): When President Obama arrives here Tuesday for the start of his European visit, no one will be more proud than Kezia Obama, his British step-mom.
Kezia, the first wife of Obama’s father, Barack Obama Sr., told the Daily News she is thrilled about the fact that he will be meeting Queen Elizabeth.
“I remember him coming to London, standing outside the gates of Buckingham Palace, sightseeing along with the other tourists,” said the 67-year-old grandmother of 12.
“But now he is invited inside as the guest of the queen. She is a great woman, and he is a great man. I think they will have a very good conversation,” the New York Daily News quoted him, as saying.
The President’s hectic schedule in the run-up to Thursday’s G-20 summit means he has no free time to visit the woman he affectionately calls “Mama” - so she will watch him and the First Lady on TV instead.
“I’ll follow everything they do. I’m very excited,” added Kezia Obama, who attended the inauguration and is planning a summer trip to Washington.
On Inauguration Day, millions saw her beaming smile and flamboyant black-and-white African attire as she greeted the First Family on the platform in the frigid cold.
Overwhelmed by her VIP welcome and the kindness of the American people, Kezia Obama said: “I always knew Barack would be President, but it’s still amazing to see what he has achieved.
The native Kenyan settled here to be near her daughter Auma, the President’s half sister. She lives in a modest project house in the small commuter town of Bracknell, an hour outside London.
Auma Obama, 49, a charity worker who joined her half brother on the campaign trail, moved to Kenya with her daughter Akinyi, 11, in 2007.
Now alone in Britain, Kezia Obama is often cared for by Akinyi’s businessman father, Ian Manners, 56, who helps out because her English is not proficient.
“She is very down-to-earth and isn’t fazed by all the attention,” said Manners, who is also extremely proud of his charismatic former brother-in-law. (ANI)
