Washington, Dec 22(ANI): US President Barack Obama looks set to break former President Richard M. Nixon’s record of 48 cover appearances on the prestigious Time magazine.

With 24 covers after just his first year in office, Obama is on pace to triple Nixon’s total if he wins a second term, The New York Post reported.

Among other US Presidents to boast of cover appearances include, Ronald Reagan (45), followed by Bill Clinton (33), George W. Bush (31) and Jimmy Carter (27).

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton with 16 appearances has appeared on the most Time covers for a female and for a non-president.

Briton Hadden and Henry Luce created the Time magazine in 1923, making it the first weekly news magazine in the United States. Since then only 16 people have appeared on 10 or more covers, and except for Saddam Hussein (12), all American politicians.

Time’s most famous feature throughout its history has been the annual “Person of the Year” (formerly “Man of the Year”) cover story, in which the magazine recognizes the individual or group of individuals who have had the biggest effect on the year’s news.

Obama was the person of the year in 2008, with Sarah Palin as a runner up.

Obama began his run for the presidency in February 2007 and after a close campaign in the 2008 Democratic Party presidential primaries against Hillary Clinton, he won his party’s nomination. In the 2008 general election, he defeated Republican nominee John McCain and was inaugurated as president on January 20, 2009. He is also the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize laureate. (ANI)
