NY Governor Eliot Spitzer resigns over sex scandalMarch 13th, 2008 - 5:11 pm ICT by admin
New York, Mar 13 (ANI): Governor Eliot Spitzer has resigned following a sex solicitation scandal that rocked the state and stunned political observers across the country.
Spitzer announced his resignation late on Wednesday with his wife Silda yb his side. He is the first New York Governor to leave office in nearly a century.
Spitzer’s resignation was anticipated after the New York Times reported on Monday that the he was linked to a high-priced prostitution service in Washington, called the Emperor’s Club V.I.P.
Spitzer is alleged to have spent tens of thousands of dollars on call girls.
A man defined by ambition and relentlessness, Spitzer appeared to struggle with his decision to relinquish power. He instructed his staff to contact the office of the Speaker of the Assembly, a fellow Democrat, to see if an impeachment vote could be avoided. But it was clear during the discussions that it was hopeless, with many Democrats prepared to abandon him.
In a brief statement, Spitzer said he would leave political life to concentrate on healing himself and his family and apologized to his supporters.
“I am deeply sorry that I did not live up to what was expected of me. To every New Yorker, and to all those who believed in what I tried to stand for, I sincerely apologize. I look at my time as governor with a sense of what might have been,” he said.
Spitzer said his resignation would take effect on Monday at the request of Lieutenant Governor David Paterson to provide time for an orderly transition.
Paterson, who is legally blind, will become the state’s first African-American leader. He represented Harlem for 20 years in the New York State Senate, where he enjoyed the respect of colleagues on both sides of the political aisle. He has deep roots in New York City politics. His father Basil is a well-known political figure who once served as deputy mayor.
Spitzer’s announcement ends a high profile career as a crusader against corporate corruption. He successfully prosecuted cases against Wall Street stock traders, mob leaders and several prostitution rings.
He was elected Governor in 2006 by a landslide. Ironically, as Governor, he signed a bill that increased the penalties of those who patronized prostitutes. (ANI)
