New Delhi, May 29 (ANI): Call it dynamism of democracy or the urge to bring the party into the mainstream politics, the Nagaland People’s Party (NPF) has approached the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI (M) to restructure its organization in Nagaland.
A delegation of NPF led by the party Secretary General Chubatemjen Ao recently met CPI - M General Secretary Prakash Karat here.
“We have decided to meet them to learn how to make the party (NPF) strong. We requested the CPI-M central leadership to give permission for interactive programme or orientation programme with West Bengal leaders of the CPI -M so that we also learn how to integrate people from different social backgrounds in Nagaland into the party structure,” Chubatemjen Ao told ANI after his meeting with the Left party.
This was the first interaction of the NPF, which is in alliance with Bharatiya Janata Party in Nagaland with the biggest Left party which has been the main ally of the Congress led United Progressive Alliance government in New Delhi.
In the elections held in February this year the NPF returned to power second time consecutively after the defeating its main rival Congress in Nagaland.
In the sixty members Assembly NPF led Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) won 26 seats and with support of two MLAs each from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and four independents it formed the government.
Despite being in alliance with the BJP NPF’s interaction is interesting. According to NPF sources the party has also conveyed to Prakash Karat that it is willing to be part of “ant third alternative at the centre”.
CPI (M)’s response to NPF’s request has been “positive” said Ao.
On alliance with BJP Ao said: “BJP in Nagaland is just a group of people and the state’s social and religious structure is such that it cannot accommodate a Hindu party like BJP,” the NPF Secretary General told ANI.
Analysts see such interaction between the NPF and the national parties like CPI -M as an attempt by the regional tribal based party to bring it to the mainstream of Indian politics. (ANI)
