Lahore , June 11 (ANI): An official from the Pakistan embassy in Abu Dhabi will henceforth handle the case of Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Asif, who is facing a charge of possessing hashish at Dubai Airport while returning home from Mumbai, said Nadeem Akram, a PCB official.
Akram was handling Asifs case till now. He returned to Pakistan last evening, expressing optimism that the bowler would be soon released from Dubai , where he is under detention for more than a week.
I am returning home, but I am hopeful of an early release of Asif, the Daily Times quoted Akram as telling media persons before leaving for Pakistan .
Though Asifs lawyers are continuing to pursue the case, Akram said that there was no word from the Dubai Attorney General or the Public Prosecutors office on whether to press charges against Asif or deport him.
Asif had appeared before the Chief Prosecutor on June 5, where he made his statement. He had appeared before the court two days later, following which the public prosecutors findings were referred to the attorney general. (ANI)
