Beijing, Sep 12 (IANS) China’s railways ministry announced Wednesday it plans to launch a new service that will allow people to purchase tickets via smartphones.

Passengers will be able to book and pay for tickets with smartphones operating on the iOS or Android systems, Xinhua quoted a statement by the ministry as saying.

The railway authority, in a move to make ticket purchasing more convenient, had opened online ticket-purchasing platform www.12306.cn last year.

A trial period will allow passengers make reservations for tickets on certain dates during an upcoming eight-day period covering the National Day holiday and the Mid-Autumn Day festival that will start Sep 30.

The ministry estimates that a total of 75.4 million trips will be made via trains from Sep 27 to Oct 7, with 6.86 million trips made each day.

Earlier this year, users complained that the computerised ticket booking system crashed due to overwhelming demand for tickets ahead of the traditional Spring Festival, China’s most important cultural event.
