Newt Gingrich sought “God’s forgiveness” for marital affairs
March 26th, 2011 - 6:10 pm ICT by ANIWashington, Mar.26 (ANI): Potential US Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said that he had sought ‘God’s forgiveness’ for his marital affairs.
During an interview he said that he’s not looking to “get past” his three marriages and it’s about admitting to “weaknesses” and “failures” for which he sought God’s “forgiveness.”
“I think you don’t get past that. I think you tell the truth and you share your life’s experiences and you admit that you’ve had weaknesses and that you’ve had failures and you’ve gone to God to seek forgiveness and to seek reconciliation and then people make a decision,” The Politico quoted Gingrich, as saying.
Presently, Gingrich, 67, is married to his third wife Callista Bisek, with whom he had an affair in the mid-1990s while he was married to his second wife.
“Callista and I have a great marriage. We have two wonderful daughters. We have two grandchildren who are terrific and people have to decide, on balance, am I a person that they would respect and trust in the White House,” he added.
The question of Gingrich’s marriages has come up repeatedly as he is stumped in the first-in-the-nation caucus state, which has a strong base of social conservatives and evangelical voters.
On a recent trip to Iowa where Gingrich spoke at the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition, voters were split on whether they were bothered by his past. (ANI)
