New Zealand’s Kermadec Islands struck by massive quakes
July 7th, 2011 - 8:02 pm ICT by IANSWellington, July 7 (IANS) Another earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale Thursday rocked New Zealand’s Kermadec Islands, that were earlier in the morning struck by a massive 7.6 magnitude tremblor, the US Geological Survey said.
The second quake hit the New Zealand territory, 116 km east of Raoul Island at 09.10 p.m. local time at a depth of 19.9 km, Xinhua reported.
Earlier in morning, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck off the Kermadec Islands. A tsunami warning was issued by the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre. However, this warning was revoked later.
Over eight aftershocks measuring over 5.0 magnitude have hit Kermadec Islands since the 7.6 magnitude quake in the morning. The Xinhua report did not mention the time the massive quake struck the islands.
Kermadec Islands are in the north of New Zealand’s North Island, one of the two main islands of the country comprising 12 cities.
