New Zealand news agency shuts down - after 132 years
September 1st, 2011 - 4:51 pm ICT by IANSWellington, Sep 1 (IANS) “We now sign off,” said a New Zealand news agency that closed after 132 years.
New Zealand Press Association shut down after Fairfax Media, joint shareholder along with newspaper publisher APN, decided to pull the plug, reported tvnz.co.nz.
The last message said: “This is the final message from the New Zealand Press Association.”
“Since 1880 there have been hundreds of thousands of stories and hundreds of millions of words recording our country’s development and daily doings.
“We now sign off.
“It has been a pleasure and a privilege.”
Labour leader Phil Goff tweeted: “NZPA’s last day. They’ve done a great job over many years and I’ve enjoyed working with the many talented journalists who’ve worked there.”
APN and Fairfax have set up their own national news bureaus while Australian news agency AAP will shortly begin a New Zealand service.
