uus-jason-dunham_ November 15, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): The very latest destroyer of the Navy was commissioned in Florida last Saturday. Thousands turned up for the event as the celebrations were held under the sunny skies at Port Everglades. The USS Jason Dunham was the name of the new battle ship for the Navy.

The destroyer boasts of a guided missile and had set the exchequer back by $1 billion to commission it. The entire length of the battle ship seemed to be resplendent in colors of blue, red and white as tiny flags and ribbons in the national colors adorned the object of attention at Fort Lauderdale, this Saturday. The Parris Island Marine Band strummed the patriotic tunes while the kids waved their flags in time to the music. The commandant also paid homage to the marine who had won the Medal of Honor. Dunham, in fact, had been the first one to win it after the Vietnam war. Deb Dunham, the mother of the fallen marine was there too and cheered the crew of the battleship named for her son. It seemed that she had gained a second family of 300 men and women who would be carrying out her slain son’s legacy in the tradition of the United States of America.

The destroyer is 510feet in length and will be kept at Norfolk, Va. The battle ship had been built in Bath, Maine. It has been named to honor the marine who threw himself against a grenade thereby protecting others. This heroic deed by the US marine had taken place in Iraq six years ago. Jason Dunham was 22 when he died.
