London, April 11 (ANI): A new book has revealed details on how the second marriage of French President Nicolas Sarkozy collapsed.

It said that Sarkozy would rather have held on to his second wife Cecila than become the President of France, reports the Daily Mail.

Cecilia left Sarkozy to go off with a lover two years before he won the general election of 2007.

At the time, he said: “She had to leave for me to realise that love is the only thing that counts in life.

“I devoted too much to ambition. If I had to choose between my career and her coming back, I wouldn’t hesitate for a second.”

Franz-Olivier Giesbert, a former close confidant of Sarkozy, made the revelation in his book, ‘Mr President: Scenes from Political Life 2005-2011.’

Giesbert also made it clear that Sarkozy was himself conducting an affair with Anne Fulda, a political journalist, as he tried to win Cecilia back.

Fulda soon left her own husband to move in with Sarkozy who “promised her everything starting with marriage.”

Meanwhile, Sarkozy was bombarding Cecilia with text messages and telephone calls, saying: “Are you happy then? Spending your time pushing a trolley in supermarkets before making grub for everyone?

“That’s not a life. At least, not compared to the one I’m offering you.”

Discussing his infidelity with Giesbert, Sarkozy said: “A woman never understands that you love only her, even if you stray elsewhere. But straying isn’t being unfaithful. Being unfaithful means abandoning her.”

There was a brief reconciliation between Sarkozy and Cecilia, but she appeared to spend much of her time in tears, and made it clear that she didn’t even vote for her husband in the 2007 election.

Soon afterwards Cecilia left Sarkozy for good and ended up marrying Richard Attias, an events organiser based in New York. (ANI)
