Nearly 50 mafia men held in Italy
June 7th, 2012 - 12:58 am ICT by IANSRome, June 6 (IANS/AKI) Italian police Wednesday arrested 47 mafia suspects and seized millions of euros worth of assets in a major operation in the southern city of Naples.
The suspects face charges of extortion and possessing illegal weapons.
The assets seized include property, furniture and vehicles belonging to the Naples mafia and the Mallardo crime family whose base is Giugliano town in Campania.
The Mallardo clan controls the local extortion racket and drug trafficking. Two of its leaders, Giuseppe and Francesco Mallardo were recently jailed for life.
The Mallardos work with the Camorra crime syndicate, one of Italy’s oldest, most powerful and violent mafia.
