NATO chopper crash kills 14 near Kabul (Lead)
March 16th, 2012 - 7:16 pm ICT by IANSKabul, March 16 (IANS) A Turkish military helicopter with the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Friday crashed into a house on the outskirts of Kabul, killing 12 soldiers and two civilian women, media reports said.
Turkish officials confirmed the death of 12 soldiers aboard the Sikorsky aircraft, Sky News reported.
The Afghan interior ministry said two girls were also killed after the aircraft hit a multi-storeyed residential building around 10.25 a.m. in Bagrami district, 10 km from Kabul.
A woman and a child were wounded in the incident.
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the aircraft may have crashed during an emergency landing and that the pilot tried to avoid the area.
Turkey currently has 1,800 soldiers serving with the ISAF.
