Nations must not reduce their commitment in war-ravaged Afghanistan:U.N. envoy

Presenting his report to the U.N., Ambassador Koenigs said that since January 2007, at least 1,200 civilians had been killed. Compared to the 827 deaths in the same period last year, this was definitely on the higher side, he added.

“We must recognize that the ISAF represents the most capable defense of the government against the insurgency,” he said, referring to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

“Nations should resist the temptation to reduce their commitment. Now is not the time to wobble,” he added.

“A disjointed international community approach, combined with a lack of Afghan leadership at the national and sub-national levels, has allowed drug traffickers to prosper,” Koenigs said. (ANI)
