Nannes can’t believe he is preferred over McGrathMay 3rd, 2009 - 6:44 pm ICT by IANS
Johannesburg, May 3 (IANS) Left-arm Australian fast bowler Dirk Nannes can’t believe that he is preferred ahead of his legendary compatriot Glenn McGrath for Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The tall Australian has been one of the top performers, providing vital breakthroughs upfront.
McGrath was one of the top bowlers for Daredevils last season but is still to get a game this year with Nannes filling one of the four foreign players slot.
“You do pinch yourself a little bit and think, I’m playing ahead of the best fast bowler in history, it’s a great opportunity and something I’ll tell my kids about,” Nannes was quoted as saying in the media here.
Daredevils captain Virender Sehwag has said that Nannes is the quickest he has ever faced.
And it does not come as a surprise where did Nannes pick up his pace.
“I’d fall asleep on the weekend on the couch in the afternoon watching Curtly Ambrose steaming in, Malcolm Marshall and Joel Garner, all those guys, yeah, I looked up to the West Indies pace attack.”
Nannes, who has never been to India, took up cricket as a pastime.
“I never had aspirations to play cricket at a really high level, when I was growing up. I was skiing for the Australian national team for a long time and I really sort of stumbled into cricket.
“People said: ‘Go down to your local club and see if you can get a game’. So I did and a couple of years later they said I should try first-class cricket and then I got a game. So it wasn’t something that I was sort of driving towards; everything just kind of fell into place,” said the 32-year-old.
A place in the Victoria state side opened up for him in the 2005/06 season. He found greater success in limited overs cricket and particularly the 20-over variety, taking 4/23 in the 2007/08 final of the Australian domestic competition.
“I played in the backyard with my brother but I never played representative cricket until I played first-class cricket for Victoria.”
