Myanmar to free over 6,300 prisoners (Lead)
October 11th, 2011 - 4:12 pm ICT by IANSYangon, Oct 11 (IANS) Myanmar state-run radio and television Tuesday announced that 6,359 prisoners will be released from Wednesday under an amnesty ordered by the Myanmar president.
President U Thein Sein signed the order to free those for good conduct and discipline, old-aged prisoners, ill-health and handicapped prisoners as a gesture of showing sympathy towards their families, the report said.
Under the amnesty order, the release of the prisoners was aimed at enabling them to serve the country in their own way, reported Xinhua.
The new government’s amnesty grant is the second time within this year since it took office March 30.
In May, the government freed a total of 14,758 prisoners nationwide.
