Washington, Dec 15 (ANI): Mukhtar Mai has raised 30,000 dollars through a fund raising event in Sacramento, California, for her school, a clinic and a womens shelter.
The event, held at a local hotel, was attended by over 300 people, most of them Americans not of Pakistani origin, but knew of Mukhtar Mai and how she had overcome adversity and personal trauma to dedicate herself to the cause of girls education.
The event was organised by the Pakistan-American Association of Greater Sacramento and the local chapter of the Council for American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).
The local credit unions, which were among the sponsors, contributed the most.
“My motto is injustice should be fought with knowledge. Sometimes men forget there are womens rights,” Mai told her audience.
“Id never heard of a school; in my village, there never was a school. The first school I went to was my own. Im still in the fifth grade. I can read Urdu with difficulty,” a US daily quoted Mai, as saying.
Mais school provides education to 700 girls and 300 boys all aged between 4-13. She said that she was yet to forgive her attackers.
“I asked that their kids come to my school, because illiteracy is what caused this,” she said, adding that five of their sons now attend, “but their daughters are not coming”. (ANI)
