Mubarak’s sons questioned over violence against protesters, corruption allegations
April 13th, 2011 - 1:56 pm ICT by ANICairo, Apr 13 (ANI): Ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s sons are being questioned over their role in the violence against protesters and corruption allegations, the country’s state television has said.
Egyptian prosecutors have also ordered their detention over the same.
The move came just hours after 82-year-old Mubarak was hospitalised with a reported heart attack after he was to be questioned by prosecutors, The Guardian reports.
Gamal Mubarak, his younger son, was a top official in the ruling party and was widely seen as being groomed to succeed his father before 18 days of popular protests brought down the regime on February 11.
Mubarak has been hospitalised in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, where he has been living since being removed from power. His sons were questioned at a nearby courthouse by prosecutors from Cairo.
The angry crowd of 2,000 people gathered outside and demanded the two be arrested, and the head of provincial security in the South Sinai assured them that the Gamal and his businessman brother Alaa would be detained.
“Brothers, whatever you wanted, you have got … 15 days,” Major General Mohammed el-Khatib said.
At least 800 people are estimated to have been killed during the protests as police opened fire on the crowds. Authorities are now investigating government officials for their role in ordering the violence. (ANI)
