London, Jan 14(ANI): Peter Athans, the only non-sherpa to pioneer Mount Everest believes that Sir Edmund Hillary has set an example for the world.
Athans who made it to the Everests summit in 1990, after three failed attempts had met Hillary on the trail to base camp in 1985 over his first expedition.
“I think it just gave people the idea that, if two people like this can do this remarkable climb of Everest, then we can do anything as well,” National Geographic quoted Athans as saying.
“He’ll be remembered, obviously, for climbing Mount Everest. But probably Ed himself would like to think that people will remember him for everything that he did afterwards,” he said.
Hillary had been visiting Nepal and worked for building hospitals, health clinics, airfields, and schools in the country.
The Himalayan Trust set up in 1962 by him supported many of these projects and even helped in higher education and reforestation programs.
Athans, also known as Mr. Everest, said that despite the achievement, Hillary kept his humbleness and has
“He had this great, self-deprecating sense of humour,” Athans said, calling Hillary, he added.
Athans has termed him as an “everyman hero.”
While recalling an incident Athans said, “There was one tourist, who was showing Edmund Hillary how to hold an ice axe properly. And he just took it all in stride and didn’t try to correct the touristcertainly didn’t reveal his identity to that person.”
Mr. Everest said that Hillary had a great sense of self-possession and humility.
“Very naturally, he had this great sense of self-possession, this great self-confidence that was matched with this remarkable humility. He was really cut from a kind of cloth that not many people are of today, he added.
Athens also deems that Sir Edmund Hillarys life is an inspiration to anyone who has ever felt that perhaps the problems of the world are so great, and the problems of people are so great, that a single individual can’t make a difference. (ANI)
