Mountain rescuer killed in Californian expedition
January 22nd, 2012 - 9:47 pm ICT by IANSLondon, Jan 22 (IANS) A British mountaineer plunged 150-feet to his death after slipping over a frozen waterfall in California.
Michael Machell, 23, lost his footing as he prepared to descend Cascade Falls during a trip to Lake Tahoe in California, the Daily Mail reported.
Having been a climber since the age of seven, Machell had assisted in more than 170 daring rescues during his career.
The Berkeley University student, of Bury in Greater Manchester, is thought to have fallen as he tried to dig a metal anchor into the ice.
“He saved lives and that is a great source of pride to our family,” said Machell’s mother Andrea.
“He was a very experienced climber — virtually a professional.”
