Mount Everest’s biggest mystery ’solved’
September 12th, 2010 - 2:55 pm ICT by ANILondon, Sep 12 (ANI): The decades old mystery of whether Briton George Mallory really reached the Mount Everest peak with his partner Sandy Irvine in 1929, almost 25 years before Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing has apparently been solved.
American climber Conrad Anker, who discovered Mallory’s body on Everest in 1999, re-traced the doomed explorer’s footsteps on the mountain, it seemed that he did.
A documentary film, ‘The Wildest Dream: Conquest Of Everest’ has shown that the duo did succeed in their climb.
“It was harder than I expected, but it’s possible Mallory and Irvine could have done it,” the Daily Express quoted Anker as saying.
Mallory and Irvine died on the mountain after being seen 800ft from the peak.
The discovery of the immaculately preserved body Mallory’s body was a discovery that haunted him for some time, he confessed.
“Had I broken some taboo? Had I overstepped something? It was pretty heavy stuff. It weighed on me,” he said.
The documentary hit the cinemas on September 24. (ANI)
