Motives of 10 Russian spies puzzles author John le Carre
July 11th, 2010 - 2:11 pm ICT by ANIWashington, July 11 (ANI): John le Carre, the pen name of David Cornwell, who is the author of Cold War espionage novel has said that says he could not comprehend what the 10 Russian spies, deported from the United States this week, thought they were doing.
According to the CBS News, in commentary published on Saturday in ‘The Guardian’, le Carre wrote, “Who did they think they were protecting in their distorted, programmed little minds as they tried and tried again, unsuccessfully, to slither up the slippery pole of western society?”
Le Carre, - the author classic espionage works such as “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold” and “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” said that there was a time when spies had motives, and took their place in a great struggle between capitalism and communism.
” But now, what was there to choose between Mother Russia and Mother America, two huge continents out of control drowning together in the oily waters of capitalism?”
le Carre asked.
“What in heaven’s name was their cause? Who did they think they were protecting in their distorted, programmed little minds as they tried and tried again, unsuccessfully, to slither up the slippery pole of western society? What was there to choose between Mother Russia and Mother America, two huge continents out of control drowning together in the oily waters of capitalism?” he added.
“Finally, why now, after our own spies have trailed and bugged these incompetent children at play for a decade? And why Vienna? Is it because, as conspiracy theorists are beginning to whisper, rightists inside America’s innumerable intelligence agencies (which from everything Obama has recently told us are just as out of control as their Russian confrères) have decided to raise the spectre of the cold war at the very moment when the president is deemed to be drawing closer to Russia?” he further questioned.
