Moscow police to enforce ban on gay rights campaign

Moscow, May 27 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Moscow police said Friday they will enforce the ban on a protest by gay rights campaigners in the Russian capital.

Nikolai Alexeyev, a leading gay rights activist and head of the Moscow Gay Pride, has said activists will try to hold the city’s first gay rights rally May 28, despite a ban on the event.

Moscow Police said Friday they would cut short any “unlawful action”.

The request to hold the rally was rejected earlier this month by the city administration.

The city received complaints from religious groups and the Moscow City Parent Committee over the application and warned that such a rally could trigger violence.

In 2010, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Russia had violated gay rights by refusing to allow gays to openly protest, and ordered the government to pay a fine amounting to about $40,000.
