London, Oct 11 (ANI): More than 31,000 couples in Britain rushed to tie the knot on October 10, 2010, as they believed it to be the “luckiest day of the century”.

The first couple to get married were Kevin Caine, 28, and Hazel Clyde, 29, from Dundee, who among others believed that the auspicious date would bring them luck.

They married on a candle-lit waterfront veranda of the Hilton Hotel in the Scottish city at one minute past midnight.

Rolf Heff, 40, and his bride Pirkko Batteiger, 44, both German, also took their vows just after midnight in a romantic outdoor ceremony at an ancient site in Loch Finlaggan, on the tiny Scottish island of Islay.

Heff said he wanted the wedding on 10/10/10 so he “would never forget” their anniversary.

“It was a dream come true, it was so perfect outside, I have never seen so many stars. 10/10/10 is a very special day, everyone was happy, you could feel the energy,” the Daily Express quoted him as saying.

Peter Kirk and Caroline Taylor were also in Scotland after eloping to Gretna Green in traditional style and getting hitched at the famous blacksmith’s shop.

The couple wanted to pick a memorable date - and it was also Caroline’s 32nd’s birthday.

Their wedding was among 43 at Gretna Green, compared to just 10 for a typical Sunday in October.

Plasterer Mitchell Glencross, 32, and carer Melanie Balazs, 26, from Carlisle, said their vows in Gretna at exactly 10 minutes past 10, and he revealed that the timing had happened “by chance”.

In Chinese culture the number 10 means perfection and one register office in Beijing married 700 couples alone. Numerologists claim the once-in-a-century date symbolises a powerful moment of rebirth. (ANI)
