Moderate earthquake hits Philippines island

LUZON, PHILIPPINES (BNO NEWS) — A moderate earthquake struck the Philippines island of Luzon on early Tuesday, seismologists said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The 5.9-magnitude earthquake was centered about 42.6 kilometers (25 miles) northeast of Laoag City on Luzon Island at 03.58 a.m. local time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It struck about 37 kilometers (23 miles) deep.

The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center initially reported the earthquake as having a 6.1-magnitude. No tsunami warning was issued, and there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
