Mississippi Tornado Ravages More Than 13 Counties

mississipiJackson, Apr 25, (THAINDIAN NEWS) On Saturday, a heavy tornado devastated a large part of the central Mississippi that led to the death of 10 people including children and left many injured. The estimated 1.6 km wide tornado affected at least 13 counties causing great damage to houses, businesses and other establishments. In some places the storm was followed by a heavy rain shower that made the condition worse. The most badly affected counties are Yazoo County, Holmes County, Choctaw County. The tornado has also hit Louisiana, Arkansas and Alabama. Governor Haley Barbour has reportedly declared a state of emergency after the tornado ravaged the state. Weather reports claim that the severe storm is now blowing towards east.

While in Yazoo County four people reportedly died due to the tornado, five casualties were reported in Choctaw County. In Homes County one person died. Out of the five in Choctaw County, three were reported to be children. Apart from the dead, reports claim that around a dozen more people got injured on Saturday as the tornado flattened and blew many homes and buildings. Many houses have been reduced to debris and in Yazoo City a church has been flattened by the storm. Power lines have been badly affected due to the tornado which had blown many posts. Many roads have been blocked by trees that have fallen on the road.

Two dozen deputies and hundred inmates have been already sent to the Yazoo County by the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department to help clear debris and assist the response. Meteorologist Mark McCallister has mentioned to the media that it seems that the storm started in Tallulah and then went on to lash at the Yazoo City.
