Miracle as 23-day old baby girl rescued alive after eight days of Haiti quake
January 21st, 2010 - 5:33 pm ICT by ANIPort-au-Prince, Jan 21(ANI): In what is being termed as a miracle, a 23-day old baby girl was rescued alive by search teams eight days after Haiti earthquake.
The teams rescued 23-day-old Elisabeth Joassaint alive in the town of Jacmel, 27 miles south of Port-au-Prince, while demolishing a house.
Family members and locals were shocked by the report, as the infant was buried in the wreckage of her home for eight days.
Elisabeth’s mother Michelene Joassaint, who had given her baby daughter up for dead after the earthquake destroyed their house, said: “It was the mercy of God. This wasn’t the way Jesus wanted the baby to die.”
While, Michelet Joassaint, the baby’s grandfather, said: “Everybody knew the baby was dead, except the Lord.”
Among others who survived were 69-year-old Ena Zizi and 25-year-old Hoteline Losana.
Zizi was saved by search and rescue workers, who had fed her water by a tube, after eight days under the wreckage of Haiti’s Roman Catholic cathedral.”She was singing when she emerged. Everyone clapped and cheered. It was an amazing thing to witness. No-one could believe she was still alive,” The Telegraph quoted Sarah Wilson, a British Christian Aid worker, as saying.
Zizi, who was later airlifted to a US hospital with leg injuries, told her rescuers that her faith had helped her through the ordeal.
“I’m all right, sort of. I talked only to my boss -God- and I didn’t need any more humans,” Zizi said.
UN spokeswoman Elisabeth Byrs said that while conditions were difficult, more people could still be recovered alive from the rubble.
She further informed that 1,700 rescue workers have saved 70 people since Tuesday’s quake. (ANI)
