Kabul, Aug 10 (DPA) A group of Taliban militants attacked a provincial capital in central Afghanistan Monday, killing at least one police officer and taking over a government building, officials said.
Around six militants stormed a police checkpoint in Puli Alam, the capital of central Logar province, and fired at the governor’s office and police headquarters, Gholam Mustafa Mohseni, the provincial police chief, said.
Afghan police and army surrounded the building, where the rebels were hiding and “a fierce gunbattle” was going on, he said.
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said six of their suicide bombers entered the provincial capital and attacked several government offices.
Logar, located some 60 km south of Kabul city, has witnessed increased Taliban activities in the past two years.
