Michelle Obama: Too Informal?

You would think she can do what she wants to, being the First Lady of USA, but Michelle Obama had something else in store or her. Fashion critics have come down heavily on the First Lady for wearing a sleeveless dress on her first official White House portrait shoot at the Blue Room. Washington had reeled under a snowstorm and the bare-arms of Ms. Obama were criticized as too informal and not in keeping with the season.

Michelle Obama had so far cut a perfectly elegant figure for herself without a faux pas and some compared her to the iconic Jackie Kennedy. The American edition of Vogue featured her on its cover as the First Lady of Fashion. But then she raised some eyebrows when she wore a purple sleeveless dress at the President’s first congressional speech last week. The official portrait of her in a black sleeveless dress may well send the critics to frenzy now.

Chicago Tribune in Michelle’s own hometown received a flurry of complaints and fashion reporter Wendy Donahue said, “One reader summed it up better than most of them. She talked about how the season is winter, the occasion was business and a sleeveless dress was the wrong style at the wrong time. Most of the complaints centred on the dress conveying a sense of informality on a serious occasion.”

Ms. Obama was also seen wearing a green sleeveless dress at a reception in the White House last week to celebrate Stevie Wonder. However, fashion experts agree on the fact that Ms. Obama treats her sense of fashion as an extension of herself, wearing only what she is comfortable in, rather than sporting trends. Arguably her bare arms are soon becoming Michelle Obama’s fashion statement in the White House.
