Michelle Obama to feature on Vogue cover (Lead)February 11th, 2009 - 5:58 pm ICT by IANS
New York, Feb 11 (IANS) US first lady and new style icon Michelle Obama will feature on the cover of Vogue magazine’s March issue and will appear in an eight-page spread that includes clothes from her own wardrobe.
While nearly every first lady - beginning with Herbert Hoover’s wife, Lou, in 1929 - has been photographed for the fashion magazine, only Hillary Clinton was featured on the cover, in December 1998, said Patrick O’Connell, Vogue spokesperson.
Michelle was photographed by well-known photographer Annie Leibovitz at the Hay-Adams Hotel, where the Obama family stayed prior to the inauguration. The cover of the issue was released Wednesday and the first lady is seen wearing a magenta dress by Jason Wu, who designed her inaugural gown, and also pictured in a black dress by designer Narciso Rodriguez, reports people.com.
As for why Vogue chose to feature Michelle on the cover, the magazine’s editor Anna Wintour said: “Change was the clarion call of Barack Obama’s election campaign, though I don’t think any of us at Vogue initially realised that would include the difference that was going to be made by First Lady Michelle Obama’s wardrobe. It’s inspiring to see our first lady so serene and secure.”
Inside the magazine, Michelle appears in an eight-page spread that includes clothes from her own wardrobe, including a black Narciso Rodriguez dress and a J. Crew cardigan, top and skirt ensemble. Photos of her with President Barack Obama from inauguration ceremonies are also featured.
