Kuala Lumpur, Oct. 5 (ANI): Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) president S. Samy Vellu’s revelation that there is no link between the MIC and two NGOs — the Maju Institute of Education Development (MIED) and the Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology (AIMST) has stunned the Malay Indian community.
The Indian community had till now believed that the MIED was the educational arm of the party, while the Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology (AIMST) was an MIC-owned university.
Samy Vellu, in an interview with a daily news portal on Friday, said that both MIED and AIMST were NGOs set up in his personal capacity when the Government under former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, failed to extend aid to the Indian community.
Former MIC veteran V. Govindaraj said Vellu’s statement would cause an uproar in the Indian community when they realize that the MIC president had used them for his benefit.
The Star quoted him, as saying that MIC branches throughout the country had collected funds from the community to set up AIMST University.
He said the allocations given by the Government were for the MIC, not for Vellu’s personal use. (ANI)
