Mexican traffic cops demanded bribe from US lawmaker

October 29th, 2009 - 1:46 pm ICT by IANS Tell a Friend -

Cancun (Mexico), Oct 29 (EFE) Many traffic police personnel of Cancun are under investigation for demanding a bribe from a US tourist who turned out to be a legislator from the US’ state of Minnesota, a media report said.
Mexican Municipal controller Jorge Rodriguez Carrillo said that the extortion complaint was filed by Michelle Fischbach in this regard.

“The traffic police stopped her in the tourist zone and, alleging a violation, they demanded between $200 and $300 from her to let her go without imposing a fine,” the report quoting Rodriguez said Wednesday.

He said the incident occurred a few weeks ago in the resort city.

Rodriguez said that a total of five traffic cops are under investigation for demanding bribes from tourists, but did not specify how many officers are involved in the Fischbach case.

In Mexico, the practice of cops’ demanding bribes to overlook traffic violations is so widespread that it has a name: “la mordida” (the bite).
