Comitan (Mexico), April 14 (IANS) Mexican police has rescued 83 illegal migrants being transported in a hidden compartment of a truck carrying animal feed, Spain’s EFE news agency reported Sunday. The migrants, 76 Guatemalans, five Salvadorans and two Brazilians trying to illegally cross over into the US territory were rescued Saturday at the town near the Guatemalan border, police said.
During an inspection, border security personnel became suspicious when they heard unusual noise from inside the truck and found the migrants banging the walls of the packed cell in sweltering heat calling for help.
The police seized the truck and arrested the driver who said he had no knowledge of the presence of the migrants on the truck.
The migrants suffering from serious dehydration were taken to a hospital for treatment.
The migrants told the police they intended to cross into the US for jobs and had paid to their agents between $14,000 and $7,000 for taking them across the border.
