mexican-independence-daySep 16, (THAINDIAN NEWS) On September 16 at midnight the celebration of the 200th Anniversary of the Mexican Independence began with a reenactment of ” El Grito”. A reenactment of the famous event in Mexico that led to their independence. A priest by the name of Miguel Hidalgo y costilla went on to ring a church bell while shouting slogans of ” long live Mexico”, ” long live Independence” and “down with the Spaniards”. This event was reenacted by the Mexican President himself. This 200 year old cry for independence that eventually provided the Mexicans freedom from the tyranny of the Spaniard is cherished by all Mexicans as is evident from the fact that “El Grito” as it is popularly known is celebrated in Los Angles and Southern California as well where Mexicans in huge number are present.

In Mexico the main event of the celebration would be the big parade at Paseo de la Reforma and come to the Zocalo square in the Mexico city. The event will be attended by about 7000 people and will feature many shows 27 floats that would depict the history of Mexico. Though this is needless to say the most important day in the history of Mexico and as all the major cities are being have being decorated with ribbons and lights which are of the same color as the Mexican flag, a grim situation happens to be gripping the country amidst its celebrations.

For some Mexicans the celebrations may not be the same as they are many flood victims who have been severely affected. In the state of Veracruz about 500,000 people have been affected by floods according to local officials while more than a third of the state is flooded. The town of Tlacotalpan has been severely affected by the floods as well. This accompanied by the bill for the party which will last about eight hours and cost $45 million is a matter of concern for some.
