Kuala Lumpur, Dec.15 (ANI): The President of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), S. Samy Vellu has asked the Malaysian Government to do more for the Indian community instead of just wooing them back to the ruling Barisan Nasional.
Government has undertaken various initiatives to lift the social and economic status of the Indians, there is still the impression within the community that more needed to be done, Vellu said. The Government must be more open and transparent in helping the Indians in this country, the Star quoted Vellu as adding. He said the MIC would continue to hold discussions with the Government to chart new initiatives for the Indian community. I do not want the Indians to harbour any ill-feeling towards the Government by continuously saying that they have been marginalized, he added.
Vellu said his party would always fight for the rights the rights of the Indian community. Nothing comes easy. It is always the MIC which makes requests to the Government, and not the other way around, he said. However, he said the MIC is happy with the various steps the Government has taken to address the problems faced by the Indian community but more gas to be done. There are still many things such as our request to have the percentage of Indians in the public sector raised, he said. Vellu said the proposed measures to assist Indians would be submitted to the Cabinet for approval. (ANI)
