Maths teacher’s punishment sparks row in China
December 23rd, 2011 - 5:07 pm ICT by IANSBeijing, Dec 23 (IANS) A maths teacher ordered his students to slap their own faces for three minutes for disturbing the class, causing parents to seek his resignation. However, some of the students have jumped to his defence, saying he has not “done anything wrong”.
The incident took place in Donglu Middle School in Pudong Tuesday when maths teacher Yang ordered 20 students to slap their faces after they made noise in the class, reported Shanghai Daily.
Those who slapped lightly were ordered to slap harder, students told the Oriental Morning Post.
Some parents said on microblog Weibo.com that “Yang should resign for his shameful behaviour that violated the basic principles to be a teacher”.
However, some students defended their teacher.
“I don’t think that Yang has done anything wrong,” said a 13-year-old student on a microblog.
“We students will be the victims to suffer losses if he no longer teaches us.”
