Mao’s grandson becomes general in Chinese Army
August 2nd, 2010 - 4:23 pm ICT by ANILondon, Aug 2 (ANI): Mao Xinyu (40), grandson of Chairman Mao, has been promoted as Major General of the People’s Liberation Army.
Mao Xinyu bears a resemblance to his grandfather, who established the People’s Republic of China in 1949.
Mao Xinyu, who is a politician and researcher at the Academy of Military Sciences of the PLA, received the promotion ahead of the 83rd anniversary of the Chinese Army’s founding on Sunday, the Global Times reports.
“This is a natural elevation. Mao’s many achievements earned him the right to be promoted,” a spokesman for the Academy of Military Sciences, Bao Guojun, was quoted as saying.
“Among the group of senior military officials, we will see more and more young people,” The Telegraph quoted Xu Hui, a professor at the National Defence University, as saying to the Global Times.
Mao Xinyu has written several books including “My Grandfather Mao Tse-tung” and has a blog.
He also serves as a delegate to the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, a body that in theory advises the main congress on political matters. (ANI)
