Raipur, Aug 6 (IANS) Maoist rebels killed four people in two separate attacks in Chhattisgarh, police said Wednesday. Insurgents killed two people in Sitagaon village of Rajnandgaon district, while two more were killed in Kotapalli village of Bijapur district Tuesday night.

Senior officials at the police headquarters here said that all the four men were killed with sharp edged weapons on charges of spying for the police.

Chhattisgarh is one of the worst Maoist insurgency-hit states, where according to the government 1,093 people including 726 civilians were killed between Jan 1, 2004 and June 20, 2008.

Police estimate that around 5,000 hardcore Maoists armed with AK-47 rifles, rocket launchers and landmines, backed by nearly 20,000 cadres, are active in the state’s southern iron-ore rich forested Bastar region, spread out in about 40,000 sq km area.
