Maoism still has intellectual appeal: NarayananAugust 12th, 2008 - 2:58 pm ICT by IANS
New Delhi, Aug 12 (IANS) India has a problem with Maoists because the authorities have not been able to snap their intellectual appeal, says National Security Advisor M.K. Narayanan. “Problem in dealing with Maoists is we haven’t been able to break their intellectual appeal that they seem to still have,” Narayanan told The Straits Times in an interview published Tuesday.
“Today there is no central issue, yet large numbers of the intellectual elite and civil liberties bodies provide a backup to the movement in terms of agitprop and other activities.
“Maoists also have become much more militarised… But that even while being militarised and committing the most heinous crimes, they are still able to get support of intellectual classes is disturbing. Unless we divorce the two it is not that easy.”
