Manmohan Singh converses in Hindi with Chinese professor of Indian studies

By Ashok Dixit Beijing, Jan.13 (ANI): During his visit to the Beijing Olympics Exhibition Centre on Sunday, the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, met and interacted with Chinese Professor of Indian studies at the Peking University, Dr. Jiang Jiangkui. According to officials accompanying the Indian media on the visit, Dr. Singh and Professor Jiangkui exchanged pleasantries in Hindi. Apparently happy with the exchange, the Prime Minister extended a grant of Rs.75 lakh (Rs. 7.5 million) to the Indian Institute of Indian Studies at the university. Peking University consists of 30 colleges and 12 departments, with 93 specialties for undergraduates, two specialties for the second Bachelor’s degree, 199 specialties for Master candidates and 173 specialties for Doctoral candidates. At present, the university has 216 research institutes and research centres, and there are two national engineering research centres, 81 key national disciplines, 12 national key laboratories. While still laying stress on basic sciences, the university has paid special attention to the development of applied sciences. Peking University has become a center for teaching and research and a university of the new type, consisting of diverse branches of learning such as pure and applied sciences, social sciences and the humanities, and sciences of management and education.
