Sharm-el-Sheikh (Egypt), July 16 (IANS) The use of Bangladesh territory by Indian insurgent groups, the contentious Tipaimukh dam, railway projects as well as other issues were on the anvil when Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh met his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina here Wednesday.
The two prime ministers met for the first time since their respective electoral victories and congratulations were also in order.
Discussing the use of Bangladesh territory by Indian insurgent groups, Hasina assured Manmohan Singh that this would not be allowed and action would be taken, Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon said.
On the issue of the Tipaimukh dam, proposed to be built on the Barak river in Manipur, which is opposed by Bangladeshi environmentalists it was agreed that a Bangladeshi team would arrive July 29 and go to the site.
“We’re ready to look at all kinds of creative solutions,” Menon said.
He described ties between India and Bangladesh as “close and intimate” and said there would always be issues “but no issues that can’t be solved with goodwill”.
Both sides, he said, were happy with the way the relationship was going.
Manmohan Singh also met several other leaders on the sidelines of the NAM summit - Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas as well as the leaders of Vietnam, Malaysia and Bosnia Herzegovina.
